Garage Floor Staining or Epoxy

I Am So Excited

I couldn’t wait to share this news with someone so the first place I turned it to my blog so I could share it with all of the peeps out on the interwebs.   I am in home improvement mode, and one thing I have always wanted to do is to make may garage really nice.   I know for some I probably lost you right there, but for others you will either have a lot of great advice, or be in awe that I am really going to have this done.

I just got off the phone with the guys over at Premier Concrete Staining Frisco, TX.   Such a nice fella on the phone.  I explained to him what I wanted, or actually that I don’t know what I want other than that I do want to do something with this garage floor.  He is going to swing by tomorrow to do some measuring, and also show me some examples of what he can do, and provide a quote based on what I decide.    I cant wait to see this final result.  I will try to take some pictures of the process as he goes through if he will let me.  I for sure will be taking before and after photos to post up here on the blog again.

So here is my dilemma.  I am not sure what I really want to do in the garage other than make it look really nice.  The good news is that no matter which route I take it will look very nice for sure.  It sounds like I have several different options.  From our conversation on the phone here is how I currently understand my options.  They may change after he shows up to give me the quote.  I am listing these in the preference I think I will probably select them.

Stained Concrete Floor

If the garage floor is in good shape, it may be a good idea to go with a concrete staining process.   With this option the floor will end up with a nice watercolor or natural stone type look and feel.  If the garage floor is not in the best of shape or has a lot of stains on it, it is my understanding this may not turn out so well because all of those imperfections will show through.   I was  originally thinking of going with this option, but I will have to see if my floor is in the right shape to handle the staining process.  This will be something I discuss with him tomorrow.

Epoxy Flooring

Epoxy is a type of paint that contains a built in hardener, and if applied correctly will not only look awesome, but will last a long time.   Before applying an epoxy flooring any imperfections in the floor will need to be patched, and the floor will also need to be cleaned.   Depending on the floor it may also need to be etched in order for the epoxy to adhere properly.   Once the floor is fully prepared and ready, you prepare the mixture of epoxy paint along with the hardener.  Then you have to work quickly because the mixture is only good for a couple of hours.   Scatter the color chips across the floors surface and add a clear coat sealant to create a very durable floor that will last for years and year to come.   It is great for the garage because oil and any other type of spills will wipe up easily.

Paint

Painting the garage floor is not an option I am really interested in, but one I have considered.  It is not very durable and is pretty inexpensive.   Just like applying the epoxy, the garage floor needs to be patched, and any imperfections need to be repaired prior to starting the painting job.  You need to use a primer and a paint specifically made for garage floors.   Since this is the least durable, prepare to paint again within a couple of years.   Just for that reason I don’t think I will choose this option because it simply will not last.

As of now that is what I have as my three different options.  I may have more options tomorrow after talking to them and figuring out the best way to go about getting this garage floor to looking its best.  I am so excited, can you tell?

If you have had experience with your garage floor I would love to hear from you and hear about what worked for you and why.  Feel free to reach out to me with your experiences.

Oh and here is a cool overlay.  I did not list it out because I am sure it will be way to much for my budget, but wouldn’t something like this look cool in the garage?
