Being My Own Exterminator

Dead Bug 1

Bug Off

As you can tell, I am pretty much a do-it-yourselfer.  I have no problem rolling up my sleeves, and getting dirty when I need to get something done around the house.   I also don’t like paying for professional services when I can do them myself.

I started noticing a few bugs around the house, and was at first thinking I needed to call an exterminator.   The thought of paying for an exterminator simply makes me ill.  I kept thinking to myself, what would this guy be spraying that I couldn’t spray myself?   So I did what any other tech savvy person would do, I googled it.

I looked around, and read a few articles, and kept reading about this stuff called Demon WP.   People were talking about how it was really good stuff, easy to use, and really killed the bugs.   Seems everyone loves it, and it is basically the same stuff the professionals use.   Funny thing is it is also very inexpensive.  So I ordered some (you can google Demon WP, and find it everywhere.   Since it is easy to find, I will not post a link to any specific site).  Here is what the current packaging looks like so you will know if you find it online.

You will also need a pump sprayer.   You can buy one of these online as well or find one at any hardware type store.  It is a good investment as you can use it for so many different things from killing bugs, to killing weeds.  Be sure to wash it out really well between each use.   You should never let any chemical like weed killer or bug killer sit in the sprayer for long periods of time, so be sure you spray the solution right after mixing it, and be sure to dump any excess and clean out the container before storing it.
Here is what my sprayer looks like.  You can buy one similar.

I used this solution to spray both inside, and outside the perimeter of my home.  Please use caution when doing this and read all of the instructions.  Make sure to keep pets and children away at all times.

I put the dog in her kennel while I was spraying, and also for several hours after it was sprayed so that she would not be in danger of licking up any of the chemical.  The chemical does not give off a harsh odor so there was not harm in leaving her in the house while I was spraying.

Spray The Inside Of The Home

First I started by spraying all of the baseboards in my home.  I sprayed extra heavy around the door areas, where it is easier for bugs to enter.  I know they can enter from basically anywhere, but it made me feel better spraying around the doors.  haha.   I also sprayed in every window sill, and around the windows as much as possible.    The spray is simply water mixed with the solution, so it will go on wet, so decide where you want to spray it.  I didnt want to get it too much on the walls.  Also know that if you have hardwood floors, you will see a white film after it dries, but you can simply wipe it up, and it will still kill bugs, but you will no longer have the white film on the floor.

Spray The Outside Of The Home

Once I had sprayed all of the windows and baseboards inside the home I went out side.  I sprayed completely around the perimeter and even into the weep holes in the brick where bugs may try to enter.  For each door, I sprayed up each side, the top, and bottom.  I did the same with the windows, and even the garage door.  I had plenty of solution left over, so I just kept spraying the perimeter and the windows until I ran out of solution.

This stuff worked

By the time I had come back inside I was already noticing dead bugs.   That is the one thing to keep in mind anytime you start an exterminating project.  Prepare to expect dead bugs.   You are killing them after all, so you will find dead bugs everywhere.
